A novel XUV autocorrelation scheme based on a Michelson interferometer with a freestanding transmission grating as a beam splitter has been designed and tested. The set up consists exclusively of components appropriate for short wavelength operation and thus it can efficiently perform over a broad spectral region extending to soft x rays. Alone this fundamental characteristic makes this new type XUV interferometer apt for measurements of attosecond pulses. We have performed proof of principle experiments using the fundamental and the 2nd harmonic of a 60 fs, 800 nm laser pulse by measuring its 1st and 2nd order interferometric autocorrelation functions. The results obtained are in excellent agreement with those from conventional autocorrelation techniques. In addition, we have investigated the dispersive properties of the XUV autocorrelator and its suitability for measurements of ultrashort pulses as those thought to be produced in high harmonic generation.
