Development of Compact ECR Ion Sources — •Roland Trassl1, Frank Brötz1, Werner Arnold1, Robert W. McCullough2, and Erhard Salzborn11Institut für Kernphysik, Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen, Leihgesterner Weg 217, 35392 Giessen, Germany — 2Department of Pure and Applied Physics, The Queen’s University of Belfast, Belfast BT7 1NN, Northern Ireland, UK

In recent years there has been a growing interest in the use of compact electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources for atomic physics experiments. Since the necessary magnetic fields for the plasma confinement are produced by permanent magnets only and therefore these ion sources have a very low power consumption, they are very well suited for the use on high-voltage terminals or Van–de–Graaff generators. The talk will give a general view of the existing ion sources in our labs and compare their performances with respect to the extracted charge states and their intensities.
