The study of state selected molecular ions is of crucial importance for a quantitative understanding of unimolecular and bimolecular chemical reactions of molecular ions. In this work we describe the formation of state selected HCl+ ions in the vibronic ground state 2Pi3/2 (v=0) by means of the 2+1 resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) via the 3Delta2 < – 1Sigma transition. The aim is to determine the rotational state distribution of HCl+ ions formed via various pump lines of the REMPI spectrum (R(1) to R(5)). This state distribution is obtained by optical projection onto a higher lying electronic state (A 2Sigma+), which predissociates. By comparison of experimental and theoretical spectra we find, that for the R(1) pump line 73% of all HCl+ ions are formed in the rotational ground state, N=0, 23% in N=1, and 4% in the N=2 state [1]. For the higher pump lines the rotational state distribution is shifted to higher rotational quantum numbers accordingly [2]. The selectivity observed in this work provides an excellent basis for the study of state selected ion molecule reactions.
