Debye Temperature of Na139+ — •Thomas Hippler, Jörn Donges, Martin Schmidt, Bernd v. Issendorff, and Hellmut Haberland — Fakultät für Physik, Universität Freiburg, H. Herderstr. 3, D - 79104 Freiburg, Germany

The Debye temperature of sodium bulk is 158 K. Below this temperature the heat capacity tends to zero because vibrational modes of the system condense to their ground state and are no longer available for the distribution of energy. The caloric curve E(T) flattens and deviates from the more or less linear progression above the Debye temperature.

The caloric curve for Na139+ is measured down to 30 K. Its deviation from the linear, high temperature progression is stronger than in the bulk. This indicates the unexpected result of a higher Debye temperature in the cluster than in the bulk.
