Caloric Curve for the Liquid to Gas Transition of Na139+ — •Martin Schmidt, Thomas Hippler, Jörn Donges, Bernd von Issendorff, and Hellmut Haberland — Fakultät für Physik, Universität Freiburg, H. Herderstr. 3, D - 79104 Freiburg, Germany

The caloric curve for Na139+ is measured up to the temperature of the evaporative ensemble, where the cluster is boiling hot, emitting spontaneously atoms. Energy, temperature and the width of the evaporative ensemble distribution are determined.

As the heat capacity for an atomic gas is known, one can construct the caloric curve through the liquid to gas transition. The latent heat of evaporation is determined. A conjecture is made on how to define the equivalent pressure for the fragmentation of a small system in vacuum.
