Endohedrally doped C60 fullerenes on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) have been produced by deposition from a mass selected cluster ion beam [1]. We have investigated the density of electronic states near the Fermi level of individual La@C60 and C60 clusters using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) [2]. We show that for endohedral La@C60 on HOPG the band gap at room temperature is zero. Temperature-dependent STS reveals the reversible opening of a 40 mV-gap in an individual La@C60 cluster near 28 K. Our results open the door for tailoring a manifold of new composite metal-fullerene materials with adjustable electronic properties due to the large number of endohedral fullerenes that can be deposited in situ from a mass selected cluster beam.
