We analyze the nonlinear behavior in an atomic V system with very different lifetimes of the two upper states [1]. This corresponds e.g. to the level scheme in In+, investigated in our lab in connection with an optical frequency standard. As signal we use the fluorescence on the fast transition which is probed as a function of the power P2 and detuning d2 of the laser on the slow transition. Two different regimes are of interest in which the system behaves in fundamentally different ways: for small P2 the absorption spectrum shows the well known double peak structure of the Autler-Townes splitting. The more interesting case is obtained when at higher P2 a coherence is induced at the 2-photon resonance d1d2 = 0 between the two upper states. The absorption of the clock laser is then suppressed and the emission of fluorescence photons on the fast transition is increased. We find that the behavior of the system is described in both cases by simple, analytical formulas; a sharp borderline separates the two regimes, similar to the case of weak and strong coupling in cavity QED.
