Air-gap dielectric spectroscopy on low-k dielectric polymers — •Reinhard Schwödiauer — Applied Physics, Johannes-Kepler University Linz

An air gap capacitance cell is presented, designed to determine the temperature-dependent dielectric properties of thin polymer films which cannot be contacted directly with surface electrodes, such as foams, porous open-cell membranes or solvent-containing polymer resins. The new measurement system allows the recording of dielectric loss spectra with a high resolution barely influenced by thermal expansion or ionic conductivity. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of such a device, measurements up to 250C have been performed on a 60µm porous poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE). The drying and subsequent curing reaction dynamics have been studied on spin-coated low-k aromatic ether polymer poly(1,1,1-triphenyl ethane perfluorocyclobutylether) (PFCB) films and on pre-cured hybrids of porous PTFE soaked with PFCB. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of curing-time dependent Havriliak-Negami relaxation processes. Work supported by the FWF.
