Confocal Raman microscopy investigations of interface diffusion processes in polymeroptical fibers — •Markus Hackenberg, Wolfram Ibach, and Othmar Marti — University of Ulm, Department of Experimental Physics

Polymer optical fibers (POF) are a low-cost alternative to glass fibers for data transmission in local area networks. They can be used almost like copper wiring without any special equipment. To bundle several POFs adhesive tapes are often used.

An important problem are plasticizers and solvents contained in the adhesive tape. Those constituents of low molecular weight might diffuse into the cladding or into the PMMA-core. In this connection optical properties change and the optical attenuation rises. An important question is, how much and after how much time the optical qualities change by such a diffusion process.

The PMMA-fibers were stored without the coating at 90 C with different adhesive tapes. The elevated temperature should accelerate the aging process. Spatially resolved confocal Raman spectroscopy and microscopy was used to image cross-sections of aged fibers. Raman spectroscopy records specific vibrations of molecules of different materials. In conjunction with the spatial resolution a concentration profile can be composed. Using different vibration modes one can distinguish the cladding from the core of the fiber and can detect diffused extrinsic material. Compositional changes of the fiber can be verified this way.
