Targeted structuring of thin polymer films with scanning force microscopic techniques offers the opportunity to create dots of the size of a few 10 nm. This opens the possibility for data storage at very high data densities [1]. So far, little is known about the optimal writing conditions. The long term stability of such tiny structures is not known sufficiently. To gain a better understanding of these nano-objects it is necessary to investigate the micro-mechanical properties of thin films. The combination of a scanning force microscope and a heating device opens the possibility to carry out temperature dependent measurements of elastic properties of polymer films at nanometre scale. Therefore force-displacement curves of 35 to 100 nm thick PMMA-films are acquired. The topographic change with time of nano-structures at temperatures close to the glass transition temperature is investigated. Important relaxation parameters which describe the transition from the viscous to the elastic state can be determined from the time dependence of the measured data. Additionally, predictions about the thermodynamic stability of these nano structures written in polymer films can be made. [1] P.
