Block copolymer films have recently been used for patterning surfaces on a submicrometer length scale, and the surface structures of such films have been investigated thoroughly. However, the internal film structure, which is determined by the film thickness, the interfacial tensions of the two blocks at the interfaces, but also by kinetic effects during the film preparation, often differs from the surface structure. We have studied spin-coated thin films of a homologous series of symmetric polystyrene-polybutadiene (PS-PB) diblock copolymers in a wide range of molar masses. The surface structures were investigated using tapping mode AFM [1]. Grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering allowed us to gain information on the lateral and vertical inner film structure. We find a characteristic molar-mass dependence of the structures.
