The femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy of iodine molecules in rare-gas environments is investigated theoretically using classical mechanics. Atom-molecule collisions induce relaxation and dephasing processes which results in modifications of pump-probe fluorescence signals. A comparison of the calculated signals with experimental transients documents, that a classical description is well suited to describe the underlying dynamical processes. It is shown, that the introduction of particular coordinates for the iodine internal motion allows for the separation of the time-scales which characterize vibrational relaxation and dephasing, respectively [1].
