Since many years the quantitative analysis of nitric oxide (NO) is important for air pollution control in combustion processes. The typical concentrations are in the range of some ppm. In recent years the detection of NO in human breath has become more and more important. In these medical applications the typical concentrations are at only some ppb. As an alternative to the chemiluminescense detection for an resonance absorption photometer a long path cell was developed. The long path cell increases the optical path by the factor 15. Additionally the cell has a small sample volume and can be simply used instead of any usual absorption cell. The experiments and many ray traycing simulations point out that the long path cell achieves it’s theoretical pathlength without the need of adjustment. At the moment the detection limit of the photometer with the long path cell is at 100 ppb NO.
