Radionuclide Record in Mid-Latitude Glacial Ice from the Tien Shan Mountains (Kyrgyzstan) — •Javier Santos1, Jürg Beer2, DeWayne Cecile3, Jaromy Green3, and Hans-Arno Synal41University of Seville, c/o ETH Hönggerberg, 8093 Zürich, Switzerland — 2EAWAG, 8600 Dübendorf, Switzerland — 3USGS, Idaho Falls, USA — 4Paul Scherrer Institute, 8093 Zürich, Switzerland

Research is being conducted on mid-latitude glaciers worldwide to enhance our understanding of the input of radionuclides to the environment. Last summer two 160 m ice cores have been recovered from the south Inilchek Glacier(42oN, 80oE), a high altitude (5200 m) and cold glacier in the Tien Shan mountains, Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia. By using accelerator mass spectrometry the concentration of the long-lived radionuclides 10Be,36Cl and 129I will be measured. Primary goals of this studies are: 1) Establishing time marker of fallout events from the nuclear weapons tests in the 1950′s and 1960′s. 2) Reconstruct the fallout distribution of 36Cl at mid latitudes. 3) Recovering the anthropogenic increase of 129I in Central Asia. 4) Evaluation of ice accumulation and establishing a time scale in combination with stable isotope and major trace element data. The status of the project will be presented.
