Resonant laser mass spectrometry is particularly well adapted to fast on-line analysis of trace compounds in complex gas mixtures. Time resolution in the range of 10 ms is possible using modern commercial lasers. These are ideal preconditions for the trace analysis of pollutants in the exhaust of combustion engines in highly dynamic working conditions, such as starting , acceleration and deceleration processes, switching gears or single failures of ignition. Often, the electronic motor controlling system cannot follow these fast processes so that unwanted and unfavourable motor operating conditions are reached for short time intervals resulting in the emission of large amounts of pollutants. Measurements at different working conditions of combustion engines are presented: The behaviour of NO (product of complete combustion) and acetaldehyde (product of incomplete combustion of ethanol) has been recorded, e.g. at cold starts. The influence of short term disturbances (e.g. switching gears) onto the concentration of aromatic compounds before and behind the catalytic converter has been investigated and the appearance of polycyclic aromatic compounds in the exhaust has been studied. Even traces of the motor oil can be detected in the exhaust, which allows the study of motor oil consumption.
