In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of small and compact facilities for accelerator mass spectrometrie(AMS). These instruments are based on tandem accelerators operating at terminal voltages below 1 MV. Ions in charge state 1+ or 2+ are selected for the final analysis. In these low charge states, interfering molecules can have bound states. This background can be eliminated by destroying the molecules in ion-atom collision in the stripping process. This new method has first been developed and tested for radiocarbon. Meanwhile commericial instruments are available for 14C dating. Recent experiments indicate that this method is also applicable for the analysis of other radionuclides such as 26Al, 41Ca and 129I. A review of this new technique is given and the limitations are discussed.
