Saturated laser induced fluorescence (LIF) is applied for measurement of the ground state metal vapour sputtered during the prebreakdown phases of pseudospark discharge. Measurements are made in a pseudospark switch (PSS) with copper cathode and hydrogen, helium, neon and argon as buffer gases. The results agree with the simulation of [1] and confirm, that the number density of the sputtered cathode particles is insufficient to invoke a field enhanced thermionic emission [2], which was supposed to be responsible for the super emissive glow, observed during the high current phase. The particle density is obtained by using the maximum and the integral of the LIF signal. There is a good agreement between the two methods of calculation. Absolute calibration is obtain by Rayleigh scattering on SF6.
