Hybrid soft X-ray laser in Ne-like sulphur at 60.8 nm has been recently demonstrated. Further development of the system requires better understanding of the fundamental processes involved. We present a theoretical analysis of the capillary discharge plasma behaviour supported by some experimental results. The discharge plasma dynamics is modelled using 1D-numerical code. The low-current, fast discharge creates a plasma channel suitable to guide the pumping radiation. The temporally resolved measurements on transmission and plasma emission in the visible range of spectrum allowed identification of the time window with the guiding effect present. Apparently inherent travelling wave pump arrangement has its own limitations resulting from the potential walk-off of the pumping and amplified pulses and this is discussed comprehensively as well.
