Plasma diagnostics on the basis of two-photon induced Balmer-α fluorescence requires UV-radiation at 205 nm. In view of the limited quality of pulsed laser radiation available, the full potential of this method could not be reached so far. Based on our experience in the development of UV-lasers suitable for plasma diagnostics, a modular laser system has been realized with a high quality pulsed Nd:YAG laser, an injection seeded OPO, Ti:sapphire amplifiers and succeeding frequency-up-conversion into the UV region (in the range of 200 nm to 300 nm). Starting with a pulse energy of 350 mJ in the second harmonic of the Nd:YAG laser, the new tunable UV-laser system delivered more than 5 mJ energy within a smooth pulse of about 4 ns duration at the fourth harmonic of the Ti:sapphire. The bandwidth of 300 MHz at 205 nm was verified at the 1S-3S/D two-photon transition of atomic hydrogen.
