Passively mode-lockedlaser performance of Yb:KGW and Yb:KYW P. Klopp, G. Erbert ⋆, U. Griebner Max-Born-Institut für Nichtlineare Optik und Kurzzeitspektroskopie Max-Born-Strasse 2a, D-12489 Berlin, Germany ⋆ Ferdinand-Braun-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik, Albert-Einstein-Strasse 11, D-12489 Berlin, Germany Yb-doped laser materials have received much attention for the generation of ultrashort pulses with high average power. These active media are especially attractive because of the availability of appropriate high-power pump diodes. New developments of high- power MOPA-structures reduce the requirements on the diode pump confinement because of their nearly diffraction-limited beam quality, in particular for directly diode-pumped short-pulse lasers. We compare the MOPA-pump with a broad-stripe diode pump (200µm stripe width, output power: 4W at λ = 975nm) and a diffraction-limited Ti:Sa pump for the performance of passively mode-locked Yb:KGW, Yb:KYW and Yb:glass lasers. The MOPA delivers up to 2W of output power at λ = 975nm with a beam propagation ratio M2 ∼ 4. Using end-pumped configurations and a saturable absorber in a standard type-z laser cavity efficient operation in the sub-ps regime with an average power of more than 100mW around λ = 1µm was obtained.
