Transport of atoms in optical lattices — •Wolfgang Merkel, Viktor V. Kozlov, Holger Mack, Matthias Freyberger, and Wolfgang P. Schleich — Abteilung für Quantenphysik, Universität Ulm

We study the transport of an atom between two neighboring potential wells formed by an optical standing wave. By applying an ultrashort optical pulse, the atom is No-dqliftedNo-dq to the excited state, forming a vibrational wavepacket. Then, by a second delayed optical pulse the atom is deexcited to the ground state. A proper choice of pulse shapes and delay times aims to take the atom to the neighboring potential well with high efficiency.
