Collective light forces on atoms in a high-finesse cavity — •Peter Maunz, Thomas Fischer, Thomas Puppe, Pepijn Pinkse, and Gerhard Rempe — Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Hans-Kopfermann-Str. 1, 85748 Garching, Germany

We study the motion of point-like two-level atoms in an externally pumped cavity field. For low saturation of the atoms, we obtain analytical expressions for the dipole force, the velocity-dependent force and the momentum diffusion coefficient for each atom in the presence of the other atoms[1]. We compare the results of simulations based on these formulas with a recent experiment[2], where the transmission of the coupled atoms-cavity system was measured for different parameters. An application of these many-atom forces is the cooling of (ensembles of) particles without closed transitions, because in this strongly coupled system, dissipation is provided by spontaneous decay of the cavity field.
