Single Mode guiding scheme for Charged Particles — •Kai Bongs and Mark Kasevich — Sloane Physics Laboratory, Yale University, 217 Prospect Street, New Haven, CT 06520, USA

Guided schemes for matter waves are a promising way to reach higher sensitivities in future interferometric applications. The role of the guide potential is to counteract gravity and transverse spreading of the ensemble. At the same time it adds the complication of additional phase shifts. These phase shifts can be compensated by the use of a symmetric geometry and transit times shorter than typical potential fluctuations. We propose a miniaturized linear rf-quadrupole guide for charged particles which offers superior confinement compared to neutral particle guiding schemes. The high transverse confinement allows to minimize transit times and offers a high degree of isolation from the environment. In particular we will present estimates for a realistic electron guide fed by a minimum uncertainty source. We will discuss applications in matter wave interferometry and quantum computation.
