By means of short intense laser pulses strong nonequilibrium plasmas may be generated which are suited for the realization of short wavelength lasers. Investigations on sodium and lithium plasmas are presented. In ns laser ablated plasmas conditions for a ground state laser in double ionized Lithium ions are hard to prepare. Further investigations focus on laser transitions between excited states. In double ionized Lithium a recombination type laser between the 3s and 2p states at 72.8 nm should be possible. Singly ionized sodium serves as a model system for a collisionally pumped laser between the 3p and 3s states at 328.5 nm. Experimental results are presented and discussed.
