We have used the powerful technique of THz time-domain spectroscopy to characterize plastics (plastomeres and duromeres). Herewith high-precision continuous spectra of the absorption coefficient and refractive index are provided. The distinct higher absorption of the polar materials polyvinylchlorid and polyamid at THz-frequencies is compared with the nonpolar polymers polytetrafluorethylen (Teflon) and polyethylen. The measurements are compared with calculations based on the Debye theory and the new molecular response theory1,2 to evaluate the relevant parameters describing the molecular polarization.
