In the macroscopic world typical quantum features of a coherent superposition of states are normally not perceivable. The effect of decoherence is hold responsible for the loss of the corresponding interference effects. We present a simple physical model consisting of a cold two–level atom falling through a quantized light field inside a leaky cavity and discuss the influence of the cavity’s decoherence on the atomic motion. This continuous degree of freedom becomes entangled with the internal states of the atom and with the quantized field via the Jaynes–Cummings interaction. As a result we show that the decoherence of the cavity can lead to the counterintuitive effect of generating coherence in the subspace of the atomic motion. For the description the quantum trajectory method is used.
