For the ultra trace analysis of actinides with resonant laser ionization mass spectrometry our group in Mainz is using a system of 3 tunable specially built Ti:Sa lasers, pumped with a commercial 50 W high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser at λ = 532 nm. The laser pulses of the Ti:Sa lasers with durations below 150 ns exhibit a spectral width of 2-6 GHz. We present here the development of a new compact Ti:Sa laser with improved pulse length and line width. The basic Z-shaped resonator has been tested with various pump lasers with different pump pulse length and transversal mode structure (1.2 < M2 < 15) and also with a cw pump laser. Laser threshold, quantum efficiency and pulse length have been investigated. Using our standard high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser we have studied the line width in a configuration using a 3 plate birefringent filter together with a solid Fabry Perot etalon and also in a set up with injection seeding using a single mode diode laser.
