Optimized energy extraction from a transversally pumped solid state laser rod by beam shaping — •Guido Klemz, Axel Heuer, and Ralf Menzel — Institute of Physics, University of Potsdam, Am Neuen Palais 10, 14469 Potsdam, Germany

One limiting factor in obtaining the highest possible brightness from a given laser head is the incomplete energy extraction from the active medium. Operation in the most - favoured transversal fundamental mode leaves part of the inverted region of a transversally pumped solid state laser rod unused. An improvement can be obtained by redistribution of the intensity - profile of the mode entering the rod. Experimental results are presented for a diode pumped laser head using diffractive optical elements that approximate a top - hat distribution. (Funded by the BMBF and the VDI.)
