The shaping and control of ultrashort laser pulses is of growing interest and its use has been demonstrated in a wide variety of optical applications, including quantum control, high speed communications, and material characterization. Our interest is to create amplified shaped pulses tunable in the visible regime. In our experiments we use a double stage non-collinear optical parametric amplification (NOPA) process. In the first stage, broadband amplified pulses (5-7µJ) tunable from 480nm to 720nm are produced by a NOPA process [1] applying a ∼150fs pump pulse of 50µJ@400nm. These pulses are then shaped in the spectral domain by acousto-optic modulation (AOM) pulse shaping technique [2] allowing sophisticated pulse shapes to be tailored with considerable ease. Shaped pulses with center wavelengths ranging from 520nm to 680nm have been generated. However, the power efficiency of the pulse shaping process is only about 15%. To compensate for this decrease in power, we further amplify these shaped sub-microjoule pulses by a second stage NOPA system with a pump pulse of 20µJ@400nm.
