We have transferred a 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate of up to 2 × 105 atoms into one- and two-dimensional optical lattices. The lattice was formed by counterpropagating red-detuned laser beams (λ = 850 nm) in the vertical and horizontal direction. No significant losses in the number of condensed atoms were detected during the loading process. Furthermore we have measured the momentum distribution of the coherent matter wave in the lattice after a time-of-flight expansion using absorption imaging. We observe discrete momentum peaks due to the periodic structure of the lattice. The momentum distribution depends strongly on the phase evolution of neighbouring lattice sites.
