Bose-Einstein condensates offers a unique possibility to study non linear effects using matter waves, as it is shown in the recent experimental observations of solitons in BEC. Solitons are waves that propagate without spreading in a non linear medium. The study of solitons in BEC include mainly three aspects: their generation, their coherent evolution including coherent effects during detection, and finally incoherent evolution and disspation.

We report here the rich dynamic present in the study of solitons in the context of one and two component condensates. In particular we analyze (a) the optimal method to create standing solitons, (b) the coherent evolution of solitons and finally (c) the decay of solitons into vortices allowing for a highly controllable vortex dynamics.
