At PSI, we build a new type of ultracold neutron source, based on the spallation process. The essential elements of the new source are a pulsed proton beam with a high intensity (Ip > 2 mA) and a very low duty cycle, a heavy element spallation target and a moderator consisting of solid deuterium kept at a temperature of about 8 K. Recent experimental studies of the production of ultracold neutrons in solid deuterium open prospects for densities of more than 1000 ultracold neutrons per cm3. As a first experiment at the new facility, we intend to measure the electric dipole moment of the neutron with a sensitivity of less than 10−27 ecm, an improvement by more than one order of magnitude.
