RIA-a new world class RIB facility — •Holger Podlech, Konrad Gelbke, Terry Grimm, Jon-Won Kim, Felix Marti, Dimitri Gorelov, Walter Hartung, and Richard York — National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, East Lansing, Michigan, USA

The U.S. nuclear physics community has discussed the scientific opportunities that become available with the construction of a world-class radioactive ion beam (RIB) facility. This new facility called RIA (Rare Isotope Accelerator) will provide up to three orders of magnitude higher beam current for exotic short lived nuclei than existing RIB facilities. RIA is based on a 1.3 GV superconducting cw operated linac. It will accelerate the full mass range from H to U and will deliver up to 400 kW beam power. A special feature of RIA will be the multi charge state operation to increase the beam current of the driver linac. In this talk an overview about the RIA project and the status of the design will be presented.
