Track recognition and momentum reconstruction with the ANKE Forward Detector — •S. Dymov — Forschungszentrum Jülich — JINR, Dubna

During the year 2000 the forward detection system of the ANKE spectrometer (COSY-Jülich) has been commissioned and first experiments have been performed with these detectors. The system is designed for the detection of high-momentum ejectiles emitted in forward direction from an internal target located in front of the spectrometer dipole D2 of the ANKE facility. In order to cover particle momenta as close to the beam momentum as possible, the counters are located at the side of the COSY vacuum tube — separated only few cm from the circulating proton beam. The detector consists of MWPC’s and scintillation counters. The former provide the measurement of kinematical parameters, like ejectile momenta and emission angles from the target. The latter allow for particle identification with the help of time-of-flight and energy-loss measurements. In addition, special inclined Cerenkov counters have been implemented for deuteron/proton discrimination. In the talk, detector characteristics as well as results of first data processing will be presented. It is shown that a number of planned ANKE experiments, including vector-meson production in proton-neutron collisions and deuteron break-up studies, can be carried out with the system.
