Spectator Fragmentation Induced by Relativistic C-12 Projectiles — •Ketel Turzo — ALADIN-INDRA Kollaboration

The multifragmentation of highly excited spectator systems was studied with the 4-pi multidetector INDRA in experiments at the GSI. Data were taken for the reactions C-12 + Au-197 at bombarding energies ranging from 1800 down to 95 MeV per nucleon and for C-12 + Sn-112(Sn-124) at 300, 600 and 1000 MeV per nucleon. Good isotopic resolution was achieved by using Si-Si-CsI(Tl) calibration telescopes of INDRA at backward angles, which are dominated by emissions from the target spectator. Besides fragment yields, multiplicities, and kinetic energy spectra also isotopic ratios and double ratios are deduced from the data. The observed variations with bombarding energy are used to distinguish equilibrated from non-equilibrated emissions in order to quantitatively identify the spectator configuration at breakup. The determined thermodynamical parameters permit tests of statistical descriptions of the multifragmentation process.
