The world of Vampires and Monsters — •Tuomas Hjelt, Karl Wilhelm Schmid, Jang Ming Zhu, and Amand Faessler — Institut für Theoretische Physik der Universität Tübingen, Auf der Morgenstelle 14, D-72076 Tübingen, Germany

The generic symmetry-projected mean-field based family of methods for solving quantum mechanical many-body problems has been put in use by active applications to a variety of realistic nuclear structure problems. The calculations have been performed using state of art techniques and computing facilities.

The VAMPIR method provides a single fully symmetry-projected general HFB-type Slater determinant description of a chosen yrast state. For the pf-shell nuclei in 0 ℏ ω model space this variational approach has proven to be a remarkable truncation scheme for the exact shell model diagonalization [1], challenging the quantum Monte-Carlo diagonalization method in the middle of the pf-shell. Even more binding energy is obtained for 56Ni with the 3-determinant description [2].

Recently, the MONSTER multi-configuration mixing method was generalized to take into account all fully symmetry projected 2-quasiparticle excitations on top of a chosen yrast vacuum determinant [3].
