Meson Production close to threshold — •Christoph Hanhart1, Vadim Baru1, Achot Gasparian1, Johann Haidenbauer1, Kanzo Nakayama1,2, and Joseph Speth11Institut fuer Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH, D-52425 Juelich, Germany — 2Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602, USA

Recent progress in the theoretical understanding of meson production in nucleon–nucleon collisions will be reviewed. After outlining some general features of meson-production reactions pion production in nucleon–nucleon collisions is used as an example to highlight the different mechanisms relevant for the production process. It is also shown, how polarization observables can help to disentangle these.

In the second part of the talk the production of heavier mesons will be discussed. Special emphasis will be put on open questions like the role of resonances in eta and K meson production. The experimental information needed to address these issues will be discussed.
