For the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Jülich a vertex detector is under development. For the cluster gas-target and the polarized atomic beam source with its extended target region of a 40 cm storage cell, it will provide near target tracking inside the ultra high vacuum. In this way it is possible to reconstruct the vertex of individual reactions. The telescope-like structure of double sided Si-strip detectors allows in addition, the ΔE/E-identification of low energy spectator protons and therfor the use of deuterium as an effective neutron-target in order to study the meson production on neutrons. With thicknesses from 65 µm up to 5.5 mm an energy range from 3-40 MeV can be covered. The use of special front-end chips allows to have a self-triggering detector system over a wide dynamic range. The detector setup must be moveable in order to limit the accelerator acceptance at injection and to reach maximum detection acceptance after the adiabatic shrinking of the beam. A prototype module has been checked under beam-conditions especially to confirm its performance for low energy protons. Test results and the detector design for the vertex and spectator detection will be presented.
