Magnetic and Structural Properties of the Electrochemically Deposited Arrays of CoFe Nanoparticles and Films — •Hamid R. Khan1,2 and Kerstin Petrikowski11FEM, Materials Physics Department, Katharinenstrasse 17, 73525 Schwaebisch Gmuend — 2Physics Department, University of Tennessee, TN.,U.S.A.

The fabrication of the arrays of nanosized ferromagnetic particles of properties such as high coercivity (Hc), squareness (Mr/Ms) and anisotropic magnetization is important for the high density storage media. The isolated nanosized (18 and 78 nm diameter) particles of Co80Fe20 are electrodeposited in the pores of anodic alumina. The 18 nm diameter nanoparticles consist of hcp phase with c-axis orientation perpendicular to the substrate surface, have an easy axis Hc value of 2257 Oe and Mr/Ms-ratio of 0.96. The 78 nm diameter particles consist of hcp and fcc phases, have an easy axis Hc value of 720 Oe and Mr/Ms-ratio of 0.22. The magnetic and structural properties of the nanoparticle arrays are compared with the electrodeposited CoFe films. The possible applications of CoFe films and arrays in recording heads and perpendicular or quantum recording media will be discussed.(1) 1.
