Photothermal measurements, based on modulated laser beam excitation of the sample surface and detection of the thermal response by means of IR radiometry, have here been used to analyze the depth distribution of the thermal properties related to surface modifications and film deposition. The results of these non-contact measurements are interpreted quantitatively in the frame of a two- or three-layer model, giving direct information on the thermal effusivity e = sqrt(k C) and the thermal diffusion time t = d*d/a of the different layers. Once the layer thickness d is known, the thermal diffusivity a = k/C, the thermal conductivity k = e*sqrt(a) and the volume heat capacity C = e/sqrt(a) can be determined. Crack formation and adhesion defects due to the absorption of strong laser pulses are identified as layer of considerably reduced thermal conductivity
