Hydrogen and Oxygen on Diamond (100) Surfaces: Fundamental Insights — •Florian Maier, Jan Kinsky, Marc Riedel, Jürgen Ristein, and Lothar Ley — Institut für Technische Physik, Erlangen, Germany

Diamond surfaces exhibit a high p-type surface conductivity (SC) which requires acceptor states near the valence band maximum. Within an electrochemical model developed in our group [1] the alignment of the chemical potential of a water layer at the surface with the work function of diamond plays a crucial role for this SC. Therefore, modifications of the work function influence drastically the SC.

In this presentation we show work function measurements, total electron yield data, and core-level spectra of diamond (100) single crystal surfaces (hydrogen plasma treated, chemically oxidized, partially hydrogenated and oxidized). The possibility to adjust the work function over a range of several electron volts will be demonstrated in a desorption study.
