Magnetic barrier in confined two-dimensional electron gases — •Michele Governale and Daniel Boese — Institut für Theoretische Festkörperphysik, Universität Karlsruhe

A hybrid ferromagnetic-semiconductor structure consisting of a ferromagnetic strip placed on top of a confined two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is investigated. The transport in the 2DEG acts as a probe for the magnetic properties of the strip. Within the framework of the Landauer-Büttiker model we develop an alternative way to consider magnetic fields. Our method allows to treat realistic field profiles, and to study devices ranging from a recently realized nanomagnetometer [1] to quasi-one-dimensional quantum wires. In particular, we provide a rigorous way to relate the experimentally measured resistance to the actual magnetization of the strip.
