Near-field optical enhancements around gold nanoparticles have been studied, using a SNOM microscope. These enhancements have been predicted theoretically [1][2] and are strongly related to the plasmon resonance frequencies and depend on shape of particles.
These enhancements happen usually near the corners and can reach several times the intensity of incident wave. However they have been very dificult to measure.
Triangular-shaped gold nanoparticles, with different sizes have been produced based on the method developed by U. Ch. Fischer [3], using latex nanospheres as masks for gold evaporation. After the removal of those spheres, triangular-shaped nanoparticles have been obtained. Their dimensional characterization has been been made by AFM and SEM microscopy, in order to compare with near-field optical images.
