Tunneling in Complex Systems and Periodic Orbits — •Joachim Ankerhold — Fakultät für Physik, Universität Freiburg

In the last twenty years a particular challenge has been to understand and describe tunneling in complex systems using semiclassical methods. Imaginary–time approaches have been very successfully applied to calculate decay rates and tunnel splittings, but suffer from the lack that they are not derived from first principles. Approaches in the real–time domain have been developed only recently and cover both coherent and incoherent tunneling dynamics. Periodic orbits play a crucial role in imaginary and likewise in real–time methods, however, within the latter approach tunneling arises as a diffusion process on the set of real–time periodic orbits. We outline the basic theoretical concepts and then present applications to simple models.
