The bonding of molecules on metal surfaces is of interest both from a fundamental as well as an applications perspective in view of the need to understand the metal-organic interface in organic electronics. We present x-ray standing wave (XSW) data with XPS and Auger electron detection for selected planar aromatic compounds, such as PTCDA and Phthalocyanines, on Ag(111). We show how the bonding distances to the substrate can be determined. The results are compared for different species within a given molecule. We also analyze the chemical shifts in XPS and the non-dipolar contributions to the XPS cross-section for various compounds and atomic species.
