The effect of strong longitudinal and transversal electric fields on the dimerization amplitude and the formation energy of solitonic excitations is considered by exact diagonalization studies within the self-consistent adiabatic approximation for the extended Peierls-Hubbard-model applied to chains with zig-zag chain geometry. The interplay of intermediadetely strong electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions and homogeneous as well as inhomogeneous external electric fields near metal-polymer interfaces are considered. Possible implications for devices based on conjugated polymers are discussed.
