Tunneling-Driven Quantum Phase Transitions in Mesoscopic Commensurate Systems of Strongly Correlated Electrons — •Ioan Baldea1,2, Horst Köppel2, and Lorenz S. Cederbaum21Physikalisches Institut, Universität Karlsruhe, 76128 Karlsruhe — 2Theoretische Chemie, Physikalisch-Chemisches Institut, Universität Heidelberg, INF 229, 69120 Heidelberg

We present an example demonstrating that CDW-to-CDW and SDW-to-SDW quantum phase transitions driven by tunneling between states characterized by charge and spin density waves of different symmetries can occur in finite commensurate systems of strongly correlated electrons. These transitions could be studied experimentally e.g. by optical absorption in mesoscopic systems.
