Femtosecond Michelson interferometry: basic analysis and measurement interpretation — •Vasily V. Temnov1,2, Klaus Sokolowski-Tinten1, and Dietrich von der Linde11Institute for Laser and Plasma Physics, University of Essen, 45117, Essen, Germany — 2Institute of Applied Physics RAS, 603600, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

A simple and robust setup for time- and space-resolved Michelson interferometry is presented, which is capable of measuring very small transient phase ( 3x10-2 rad) and amplitude changes ( 2 percent) with femtosecond temporal and micrometer lateral spatial resolution. The high measurement accuracy is achieved by using a 2D-Fourier transform reconstruction technique for interferogram processing. The aspects of optical image formation and processing as well as the physical interpretation of interferometric measurements are discussed.
