Swarm kinetic theory and low temperature plasma physics — •Robert Robson — Institut fuer Niedertemperatur-Plasmaphysik, D-17489 Greifswald

Swarm experiments have for long played an indispensable role in the determination of both low energy electron-molecule impact cross sections and ion-atom and molecule interaction potentials, but the number of experimental groups has declined in recent times. Nevertheless, the associated kinetic theory and computational techniques for solution of Boltzmann’s equation have continued to undergo intense development(R.D. White et al, Comp. Phys. Comm. 142, 349 (2001)), the motivation now being especially for applications to low temperature plasmas. This paper summarises recent developments in the theory, and makes a number of recommendations for facilitating a more cohesive approach by all concerned with the understanding and modelling of weakly ionised gases.
