Edge Transport Studies in the Island Divertor of the W7-AS Stellarator — •Franz Gadelmeier, Yühe Feng, Peter Grigull, Kent McCormick, and W7-AS Team — Max–Planck–Institut für Plasmaphysik, Boltzmannstrasse 2, D–85748 Garching

W7-AS is a low shear, 5-period modular stellarator (R=2 m, aeff∼ 0.14 cm for ιa∼5/9). The divertor concept is based on the intrinsic magnetic island configuration at ιa=5/9. Additional control coils can be employed to modify the distance between target and X-point, it varies in the range of 0−4 cm. Since the island width in the W7-X stellarator is comparable to the W7-AS islands, the knowledge about the edge transport in W7-AS plasmas is of particular interest in order to predict the W7-X divertor performance.

In order to evaluate the transport coefficients, profiles of the heat flux onto the target plate are computed using the EMC3-EIRENE code. Thereby, the transport coefficients are varied until the calculated profiles fit to the measured profiles. These are experimentally determined from Langmuir probe measurements. The transport studies revealed that in the normal confinement mode the electron heat conductivity χe scales inversely with the electron density and increases with heating power.
